The Procedure

What Is Varicose Veins Treatment?

Modern laser-based vein treatment has replaced traditional vein-stripping in most cases — no general anaesthesia, no large wounds, walk in and walk out.

Endovenous Laser Ablation

Walk-in, walk-out treatment for varicose veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that develop when valves inside the leg veins fail, allowing blood to pool. They cause aching, heaviness, swelling, and skin changes — and in severe cases, leg ulcers. Modern EVLA (endovenous laser ablation) seals the diseased vein with laser energy through a tiny puncture, under local anaesthesia, in a single outpatient visit.

Signs & Symptoms

When You May Need Treatment

Varicose veins often start cosmetically but progress to cause real symptoms and complications. One or more of the following warrants assessment.

  • Visible bulging veins — twisted, rope-like veins, usually on the calves and thighs.
  • Heavy aching legs — worse at the end of the day, especially after prolonged standing.
  • Ankle swelling — especially in the evening, improves with leg elevation overnight.
  • Itching or burning — over the affected veins, often worse in warm weather.
  • Restless legs at night — an uncomfortable urge to move, disturbing sleep.
  • Skin pigmentation — brown discolouration of the lower leg from chronic venous disease.
  • Venous leg ulcer — non-healing wound, usually above the ankle — a sign of advanced disease.
  • Bleeding from a vein — minor trauma to a varicose vein can cause surprising bleeding.
Treatment Techniques

Types of Varicose Vein Treatment Offered

Prof. Kibria selects the most appropriate technique based on duplex ultrasound mapping and the size and distribution of the veins.

01

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

Modern Standard

Gold-standard treatment for truncal vein reflux. A laser fibre is passed inside the diseased vein under ultrasound guidance and seals it shut. Local anaesthesia, walk-in walk-out, >95% closure rate at 5 years.

02

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Alternative to Laser

Uses radiofrequency energy instead of laser to seal the diseased vein. Equally effective, also performed under local anaesthesia with similar recovery times.

03

Foam Sclerotherapy

For Branch Veins

A foam solution is injected into smaller varicose branches or residual veins, causing them to scar shut. Often combined with EVLA for a complete result. Quick, painless office procedure.

04

Conventional Vein Surgery

Selected Cases

Open surgical stripping of the diseased vein under general or spinal anaesthesia. Now reserved for very large veins or selected anatomy not suited to endovenous techniques.

After Your Treatment

Recovery Timeline

EVLA recovery is remarkably quick — most patients are back to normal life within days.

Day 0 — Procedure Day

Walk-In Treatment

45–60 minute outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia. Compression stocking applied. Walk out of clinic and resume light activity the same evening.

Days 1–3 — Light Activity

Walking & Stockings

Walking is encouraged. Compression stocking worn day and night for the first week. Most return to office work within 1–3 days. Some bruising and tenderness along the treated vein.

Week 1 — Review

Duplex Follow-up

Review appointment with duplex scan to confirm successful vein closure. Compression stocking switched to daytime use only. Resume light gym work.

Weeks 2–4 — Full Activity

Sclerotherapy Top-Up

Any residual branch veins treated with foam sclerotherapy at this stage. Gym training, running, and swimming all resumed. Bruising fades.

3 Months — Long-Term Result

Cosmetic & Symptomatic Resolution

Final cosmetic result visible — bulging veins gone, skin clear, symptoms resolved. Long-term success supported by compression hosiery, regular walking, and weight control.

Frequently Asked

Varicose Veins FAQs

Have another question? Send us a message.

What is EVLA (endovenous laser ablation)?

EVLA is the modern gold-standard treatment. A thin laser fibre is passed through the diseased vein under ultrasound guidance and local anaesthesia; laser energy seals the vein shut and blood is redirected to healthy veins. Walk-in, walk-out procedure.

Is varicose vein laser treatment painful?

No — EVLA is performed under local anaesthesia. Most patients feel only mild pressure during the procedure and minor bruising for a few days afterwards.

How long is the recovery?

Most patients walk out of the clinic immediately and return to office work the next day. Compression stockings for 2 weeks. Light exercise resumed at week 1, gym by week 3.

Will my varicose veins come back?

EVLA has excellent long-term results — over 95% of treated veins remain closed at 5 years. New veins can develop elsewhere over time, especially with pregnancy, prolonged standing, or obesity.

Do varicose veins need treatment?

If they cause symptoms (aching, heaviness, swelling, skin changes, or ulceration), treatment is recommended to prevent progression. Purely cosmetic veins can be observed.

EVLA vs sclerotherapy vs surgery — what's the difference?

EVLA seals the main truncal vein with laser. Sclerotherapy injects foam for smaller branches. Conventional surgery strips the vein — effective but longer recovery. Most patients today benefit from EVLA, often combined with sclerotherapy.

What are the symptoms of varicose veins?

Visible bulging or twisted veins, heaviness and aching, throbbing, itching, ankle swelling, restless legs at night, skin discolouration, and in severe cases leg ulcers.
