Breast surgery covers a spectrum — from a small day-case lump removal to oncological surgery for breast cancer. Modern care is precise, breast-conserving where possible, and supported by a wider multidisciplinary team.
Most breast lumps are benign — fibroadenomas, cysts, or fibrocystic changes — and most patients we see are reassured after a careful assessment. When surgery is needed, the principles are the same: precise removal of disease, minimal cosmetic impact, and full multidisciplinary support for breast cancer care including oncology, radiotherapy, and reconstructive options.
Most breast symptoms turn out to be benign — but every new change deserves a careful assessment.
Prof. Kibria personalises every plan after a confidential consultation, triple test, and discussion of all options.
Small cosmetic incision to remove fibroadenomas, cysts, or other benign lumps. Day-case procedure under local or short general anaesthesia. Excellent cosmetic outcome.
Removes the cancer with a margin of healthy tissue while preserving the breast. Combined with radiotherapy, offers the same long-term survival as mastectomy for most early breast cancers.
Removal of the whole breast, with options for immediate or delayed reconstruction (implant or autologous tissue) — chosen for larger, multifocal, or genetically high-risk cancers, or patient preference.
Sentinel node biopsy is the modern, minimally invasive way to check lymph node spread. Full axillary clearance is performed only when nodes are positive — reducing arm side-effects.
Recovery varies by procedure. Most patients return to work and routine far sooner than expected.
45–120 minute procedure under general anaesthesia. Day-case discharge for benign lumps and lumpectomy. 1–2 nights in hospital for mastectomy. Effective pain control throughout.
Light activity, shoulder exercises, dressings as instructed. Drains (if present) checked daily. Most patients are off strong painkillers within a few days.
Review with Prof. Kibria — wound check, drain removal, histopathology results discussed, and next steps planned with the multidisciplinary team.
Lumpectomy: office work in 7–10 days, full activity in 2–3 weeks. Mastectomy: office work in 3–4 weeks, full activity in 4–6 weeks. Shoulder physiotherapy as needed.
Annual mammography and clinical review. Hormone or targeted therapy when indicated. Lifelong breast self-awareness and prompt reporting of any new change.

No — the vast majority of breast lumps are benign. However, every new lump should be assessed with a triple test (clinical exam, imaging, biopsy when indicated).
Lumpectomy removes just the cancer with a margin — preserving the breast (combined with radiotherapy). Mastectomy removes the whole breast — for large, multifocal cancers or patient preference. Reconstruction can be added.
A minimally invasive way to check lymph node spread. The first 1–3 nodes that drain the breast are identified using dye/tracer and removed. If clear, no further node surgery — sparing arm side-effects.
Lumpectomy: day-case, office work in 7–10 days. Mastectomy: 1–2 nights in hospital, office work in 3–4 weeks. Full activity at 4–6 weeks.
Any new persistent breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin/nipple changes, persistent pain, or family history warrants assessment. Most patients are reassured; some need a small day-case operation.
Yes — immediate or delayed reconstruction options, including implant-based or autologous (using your own tissue). Prof. Kibria works with plastic surgery colleagues for the right plan.
